CAL FIRE Increases Staffing in Preparation for More Strong Winds

Sacramento- CAL FIRE firefighters statewide are currently preparing for the potential of extreme fire weather across many parts of California this week. The National Weather Service is predicting gusty winds and low humidity’s starting Wednesday evening going through Friday morning of this week in Northern California. This extends from Siskiyou county south to parts of the south Bay Area. There will also be a Red Flag Warning in Southern California starting Thursday morning and going through Friday evening. The Red Flag Warning in Southern California will extend from the Mexican border north to Santa Barbara County. Be aware that as the week progresses the areas of Red Flag Warnings can change.

“As we remember the tragic fires that occurred in October and December of last year, they should serve as a stark reminder for everyone to be prepared for the unexpected. We have increased our staffing throughout the state, but just as important the public needs to remain vigilant,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “It is very important to follow evacuation orders and to leave early as fires will move extremely fast under these predicted conditions."

CAL FIRE urges everyone to exercise extreme caution when in or near the wildland or open areas to prevent sparking a fire. One Less Spark, means One Less Wildfire. A few helpful reminders and safety tips include:
  • Don’t mow or trim dry grass on windy days
  • Never pull your vehicle over in dry grass
  • Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and is not dragging anything on the ground
  • Secure tow chains, dragging chains will throw sparks
·        Report any suspicious activities relating to wildfire starts
